Bird on a Wire: Savannah Sparrow Edition

By josh • Nature, Wildlife • 25 Oct 2012

I’m accustomed to seeing savannah sparrows perched on all sorts of things, often juniper, red cedar, or a variety of other low shrubs or grasses.  The best looks I’ve had have generally been at Hurd Grassland in Weybridge, where MALT and OCAS do an excellent monthly wildlife walk (next ones are 11/10 and 12/13).

This one was at the East Creek WMA in Orwell, and was content enough to allow me to wander pretty close.  While it seems that a few hardy individuals may stay in Vermont through the winter, most savannah sparrows head south around the end of October.
