Leasts at Last

I haven’t been hanging around Dead Creek much this year now that we’re not living and working in Addison County, so I haven’t seen nearly as many least sandpipers as I have in the last several years.  I did spot a few at Delta Park last week (from quite a distance), but the best siting was again at Shelburne Bay.  They flew in with a large flock of killdeer (more on that in another post) and puttered around in the rocks and slop exposed by the low lake level.

Least sandpipers are very busy little critters, and these photos don’t convey their frenetic nature.  They’re probably not too exciting for people on the coasts who see flocks of shorebirds every day, but I’m always glad to see them here on New England’s West Coast.
