Great egrets seem to be establishing a regular population in the Champlain Valley in the last several years- I’ve seen them at several locations on Dead Creek, the LaPlatte River, around Shelburne Pond, and in large numbers near the mouth of Malletts Creek.
I found this bird at the outlet of Shelburne Pond (Muddy Brook) where it crosses Hinesburg Road. I was looking for a least bittern (unsuccessfully, again), but this was a nice consolation prize!
